“In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. This dinar was struck in Ṭarābulus in the year five and thirty and four hundred (435 AH). Maʿadd, the Imam Abū Tamīm al-Mustanṣir bi’llāh, Commander of the Faithful.”
The inscription provides the essential numismatic information of mint, date and issuing authority, allowing this Fatimid dinar to be placed precisely within the political and monetary history of the eleventh-century Islamic Mediterranean.
The reverse carries an extensive religious declaration:
علي لا إله إلا الله وحده لا شريك له محمد رسول الله ولي الله محمد رسول الله أرسله بالهدى ودين الحق ليظهره على الدين كله ولو كره المشركون
“ʿAlī. There is no god but Allah alone; He has no partner. Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. ʿAlī is the Friend (Walī) of Allah. Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, whom He sent with guidance and the religion of truth that He might make it prevail over every religion, even though the polytheists detest it.” (Qur’an 9:33)
