The finely engraved portrait is surrounded by a Latin inscription referring to her imperial and royal titles. The reverse presents the spectacular crowned double-headed Habsburg eagle, holding the ornate imperial coat of arms, surrounded by the titles associated with the Austrian Habsburg monarchy.
This example bears the famous 1780 X date. An important feature of the Maria Theresa Thaler is that the 1780 date was retained on many later restrikes, meaning that a 1780-dated specimen is not necessarily an original lifetime strike from 1780. The continued production of this historic type transformed the Maria Theresa Thaler into one of the world’s most enduring and recognizable European silver coins.
